Autopilot & stove

Posted by Chester Jeannie King on January 22, 19100 at 04:44:05:

We are looking at replacing our Autohelm 3000 with the ST 4000 model, does
anyone have either of these models? Also what model of gas stove comes on the
36' now, we have a alcohol type and want to retro fit something with an oven. We
will appreciate all feedback

Thanks,
C & J King

We're happy with our ST4000+ (I don't think that you can get the 4000 any more)

It certainly steers better than I can, except when going downwind in a big way

However, I don't have anything to compare it to. I do like the fact that it will
tie in to other SeaTalk instruments, especially so that you can sail to a wind
angle, rather than a compass course or to a waypoint. We're fitting a
radar/chartplotter at the moment, so that should make things even more
versatile. One thing I can highly recommend that you add, is the ST600R remote
control. Not only does it mimic the autopilot from anywhere on the boat, but
works as a repeater for any other SeaTalk instrument in the chain. Not so
important for reading the water temperature, but keeping an eye on the depth
while steering from the trampoline is both a luxury and an aid to peace of mind.

We had a 4000+ in our PDQ 32 and weren't overly impressed with its performance

We went through two factory H/W and S/W upgrades and still couldn't trust it
alone for long without having to correct course. The problem was always
excessive yawing. We tried many combinations of parameter setups, including
several suggested by the factory service people (conveniently located nearby)

The explanation might be that we had skegged rudders which reduced the
sensitivity to steering inputs. Steering responsiveness was not at all like on
our old spade rudder monohull

We haven't decided yet whether to give the 4000 another try on our new 36 or to
use a linear drive 5000

We have been very satisfied with Force 10 two burner stoves with broiler (on two
previous boats) and are going with the two burner with oven/broiler on the 36

Get a catalog with prices and dimensions from their factory (1-604-522-0233,
Vancouver, BC). There are several door options, and a thermostat controlled oven
is now available. Check the dimensions to be sure that the galley can have a
cutout that fits; the new 36's seem to be designed for it. The non-gimballed
versions of the stove have a metal body that "drops-in"

Hope this helps

We have the 4000 in our 32. Did have to have it repaired after about 700+ hours
of use($150). It works very well in all conditions. I set it up to react quickly
due (almost the powerboat setting). Works under spinnaker very well also

Wouldn't ever want to be without it!!

I also have the autohelm 4000 (not the ST) which is about 4 years old. I have
not had any problems with it and use it as an extra hand on the boat if I go out
alone. If you have a wind instrument with it, you can have it sail the wind
gusts for you an keep your sails trimmed for one wind angle instead of
adjustingfor the gusts. It makes day sailing very easy. There is a section in
the manual that tells you how to set it up for sail / power boats. If you set it
up to your boat, you should not have a problem

We have 320022 so I can't advise you on the stove for a 36. You could call PDQ
and I am sure they would give the name and model number of stove they put in you
model boat.

We have a 4000 on our PDQ 32 #15. It does fine
to weather and on reaches up to about 150 degrees

With any kind of following sea it cannot seem to keep
up with the yawing. It also does not handle the
spinnaker well

The unit came with the boat when
we bought it used last April and I have
not had time to have it checked out yet

Perhaps it needs some maintenance or adjustment

Even with its down wind limitations I would not
want to be without it. It is a great convenience,
especially when sailing short handed or making
long tacks. Hope this helps.
