Outfitting

Hello all
It is time for me to decide on my options for Feral Cat (working name, hull
#83), whose launch has been moved up to May

I’ll be installing most of the electronics myself

What would you change about your boat, or what are you really pleased with on
your boat? I’d like to have your input. You can post answers here or reply
directly to me

Thanks
Rich

I sent this yesterday but it never showed up on the net. I hope it is not a
repeat

Sounds like Jeff is giving you some good advice. I put the standard battery
charger in mine and wish I had upgraded. I also wish I had intalled my knot
meter in easier location. I would give up a little accuracy for ease of access

We installed all our own instruments also. We have all Autohelm
products(Raytheon now) and are very pleased with them

In order to make some better suggestions for you, it would help to know if your
gas / diesel eninges and where you are going to cruise /live aboard

Good luck and congratulations. Love the name

Dan, you mentioned that a post was missing. It could be something having to do
with your cache. It is a good idea to press Refresh each time you enter the page
of posts at the start of a session or after posting. This *should* refresh with
the latest message list

Hi Rich, I have "MOJO" Hull#78 (36), I have almost finished all the toy
installations here at our yard in Oriental, NC. We installed 1721 Furuno radar;
Garmin 215 plotter/gps with diff.; central ac/heat; Dutchman system; JVC stereo
with main salon speakers and cockpit flush mount;extra 110v outlets, a Heart 20
inverter/charger; Friddel "blipper" reflector; West Marine TV antenna; a 9"
ac/dc vcr mounted on a swivel base; EPIRB; tachometers for the 9.9's; remote VHF
speaker, complete canvas enclosure; cruising chute;Taylor BBQ; St Croix motor
lift; etc, etc, we have some very highly skilled techs here in our facility and
they did some outstanding work on these installations. Along with some
recommendations from Rory, everything is working great! I have the means to e
mail you photos of the work, or will give you details of anything we did. If I
can help, please do not hesitate to contact me. Good Luck! Best Regards/Jack
Coulter

You have gotten some great advise from Jeff. The ease of getting to that paddle
wheel is really important. Any time you leave the boat in a nasty harbor for a
week, You can count on having to deal with it. It can be reached from the dingy
also. The choice of a good battery charge is also key. Don't go with a small on

I installed all my own electronics also. I have all Autohelm (now Raytheon) and
have had great success. Do you have Yamha's or Yanmars? Are you doing a down
wind sail? Where are you cruising? Those things are important in the decision
process. God luck on the boat & congratulations!!!

My pet peeve with the installation is that the speed transducer (the "spinner")
was mounted so far forward that I have to empty the closet, and crawl in, and
blindly reach with one hand. The first time I found the the replacement plug was
on a lanyard six inches long! After snipping the lanyard, there wasn't enough
slack in the wire to get spinner out of the closet. I ended up going most of the
summer without a speed log before I found the right cable tie to cut! Its still
a royal pain to deal with. Obviously, the person that set this up had never been
on a boat! I would ask that the spinner be in the accessible bilge, even if that
sacrifices accuracy

When I got my final systems "check out" I mentioned that I was going to add a
Link 2000R to the Heart charger. The reply was "I wish I knew that - I would
have left space for the shunt at the battery connection!" It turned out OK, but
the lesson is to give a detailed list of all the items you intend to add so that
certain accomodations can be made

I instantly found a shortage of breakers. I'm sure they thought the right thing
was to put each instrument on a different circuit, but I prefer to have one
switch for all the cockpit instruments. Also, the order of the breakers seems
totally random

On the other hand, the quality of the wiring (and virtually all the work) was
first class - you can instantly spot my additions by the rough edges and
dangling wires!
One addition I really like (though it's pricey!) is the Hart tank gauge. Since
the holding tank has no gauge, and is impossible to "sound" something is needed

Also, the single water tank is a bit of a liability, so its nice to be able so
read the level quickly. Its an easy installation, since no wiring is needed

Congratualtions on your new boat; I'm sure you'll love it!
