mast supports for Erie/Oswego Canal transit

Posted by Tom Root on March 26, 19100 at 19:35:19:

"TomKat" (ex. Tropicat, ex. Walkabout)is resting comfortably up the Cooper River
northwest of Charleston. This summer Kathy and I are bringing her back to Whitby
and then on to Lake Erie. We'll have to drop the mast for the Erie and Oswego
Canals. Anyone have plans for a simple, secure mast cradle/support (32PDQ
w/hardtop)? Also, any suggestions for marinas to drop and raise the mast?
THANKS!

You are obviously going to pass right by my home on the Pamlico River. You can
stop by, or near by, and borrow Duet's if you are coming back this way. If not,
I could knock out a set from scrap wood around here. Get in touch by email and
let me know what your preferance is

The factory mast supports for our (now ex-) PDQ 32 consisted of two 2x4's
clamped together with long carriage bolts to hold securely to the port-side bow
and stern pulpits. Onto each of these was carriage-bolted a piece of ~3/8"
plywood with a U-shaped cutout for the mast to hold it on edge. The rig should
be high enough so the the mast just clears the middle of the side deck. The
"Altair" mast overhang is long enough to require care when maneuvering in the
locks. If you have furling gear, be sure to remove the drum to reduce the
loading on the unsupported part of the luff tube.

See http://www.sv-loki.com/Delivery/delivery.html for some pictures of the
factory supports. Not a lot of detail, I'm afraid. If the factory can't give
plans, I may be able to find my supports and post closeups. They were very
strong - I didn't appreciate that until the day after we crossed from Whitby, a
couple left westbound from Oswego and turned back because their mast was
bouncing. Don't underestimate the seas (or are they "lakes"?) that can come up!
Another point - remember that your radio antenna will be down. If you plan to
use a "big" radio rather than a handheld, make sure that your jury rig antenna
is vertical. Ours was at an angle and usually couldn't reach half a mile to talk
to the lockmaster. When we were raising the mast at Catskill it hit me that with
the radiation pattern only receivers beside us could hear us!
Have fun on your trip!

Hi Tom - We brought our 36 down last Nov. and had the mast stepped in Catskill,
NY. There's two marinas there, we stopped at the first one. It took them about 4
hours and the charge was $80.00. Unbelievabley cheap! Lynne at PDQ probably can
give you the name of the marina. The factory used a mast support made from 2X4's
and secured one to the port bow pulpit and the aft port stern pulpit. Worked
well with no problems. Have a safe trip. Best Regards/Jack Coulter p.s. We
(Deaton Yachts) are working the Charleston Boat show April 6 - 9, stop by, we
have the new 42 & 38 Hunters on display.
