Yanmar 2 piece Saildrive Zinc Kit

Post by phild »

I'm hoping to replace my existing one piece units in order to avoid the need to remove my Max Props to replace the zincs which is a real pain. Problem is these conversion kits seem to be hard to come by! Does anyone have any experience with these split zincs? Any supplier recommendations?

Thanks!

Expensive units but you can probably get them through Mack Boring. When I was quoted by Journey's End Marine in Rockland I think that is where they were getting them from. Two other places to check are www.marinepartsexpress.com or www.boatzincs.com.

A second to Bob's suggestion to contact www.boatzincs.com as our boatyard is using them for our Yanmar saildrives. They've got lots of good info on the website. Ours are actually three parts, if that makes a difference. I can send part number if it's helpful - send PM here or use angela@roodassoc.com to request.

As a point of clarification the zincs in question are the ones that attach directly to the saildrive (not the shaft). Unfortuantely the it appears yanmar has cornered the market on these units - see my correspondance below from Bob at BoatZincs:

Phil,

Okay, here's the poop.

My foundry (CMP Global) just a few days ago entered into an agreement to
supply Yanmar with split ring zinc anodes. This unfortunately means that
the product is being private labeled to Yanmar and unavailable to
BoatZincs.com to sell to customers in general. The only source this year
(2009) for Yanmar SD20/50 split ring anodes will continue to be Yanmar. I
do not know their pricing, but I'm sure it's ugly.

Sorry I don't have a better answer. Maybe next year (2010).

Best regards,

Personally I do not see the reason to use these split zincs. If the spline is properly greased it only takes minutes to disassemble the blades and remove the hub to change out the one piece zincs. I know the split zincs are >$100 and the originals can be had for < $20.

Bob,
I hear what you are saying - it has more to do with my discomfort with disassembling the Max Props. Lets call it the Humpty Dumpty syndrome :D .
