Diesel compared to outboards

Posted by Denny DeRanek on April 21, 2003 at 09:31:00:

I am shopping for pdq 36, and trying to decide rather deisel or out boards. I
have been on boats with both. Does any one have any opinions or facts one way or
the other

Thanks in advance

We chartered Anagyri which has outboards, but bought Half Moon which has the 18
HP Yanmars. We motorsailed (with emphasis on motor) our new boat from Ft

Lauderdale to Edenton, NC, a distance of about 1000 miles, up the ICW in
fourteen days. My comments are based on this limited experience. We had the
Entec diesel generator installed before we left. Running the three diesel
engines required about 1 gallon/hr. Without a doubt, the outboards are faster
when under sail, more convenient to service and less expensive. But, given our
desire to have AC available underway it made sense to have one fuel source and I
am much more comfortable with diesel fuel aboard. Also, the quieter, lower
frequency diesels are more conversation friendly. Unless you're a daysailer or
making open water passages, you're going to be listening to those engines quite
a bit. Good luck.
