Electronic Charts

Post by Mary Pamela Kilmer »

I thought this may be of interest to some folks. I received this email from Mark and Diana

Hi Guys,
Diana and I thought you'd like to see our Seattle Boat Show press release. Our Pacific Coast electronic chart DVD is proving pretty popular. It's already had great write-ups in Nor'westing, Good Old Boat, Sea, 48 North, Lats & Atts, etc.
In all, we've sold over 1000 electronic chart CDs or DVDs since June! Boaters seem to be really happy getting updated electronic charts on the cheap!
Could you please remind PDQers of our MTW 20% discount. The 2-DVD set is great for East and Gulf Coast, Great Lake, and Great Loop boaters. The Pacific Coast DVD is targeted for folks on the "other" coast :-)And, as always, thanks for your support!
Stay in the deep water,
Mark

Managing the Waterway Electronic Chart Series Expanded
Pacific Coast DVD includes over 1000 raster and vector NOAA charts; searchable Coast Pilots and Lights Lists;
plus free and trial versions of leading charting and navigation applications for PC and Macintosh
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (January 25, 2007) — Cruising guide authors and electronic chart publishers Mark and Diana Doyle are introducing
their Pacific Coast DVD collection of NOAA electronic charts at the Seattle Boat Show, January 25-February 3, 2007.
Priced at $24.95, the DVD contains over 1000 raster and vector NOAA charts; searchable government publications including
Coast Pilots and Lights Lists; plus free and trial versions of leading charting and navigation applications for PC and Macintosh.
“One of our retailers called to suggest a new product,” said Mark Doyle, co-author of the MTW guide series. “Ann Kinner of Seabreeze
Nautical Books & Charts joked that whereas East Coast cruisers were likely to use much of our Complete Chart Library
2-DVD Set, West Coast boaters were smart enough to know they didn’t need charts for Camden, Annapolis or Key West! She
thought a focused catalog for the Pacific Coast, at a reduced price, would be a hit. So we compiled the relevant charts and government
publications for California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and the Pacific Islands onto a single DVD.”
The Managing the Waterway Charts Series now offers boaters three inexpensive, expert-cataloged options for acquiring updated
electronic charts and government publications:
- Individual Cruising Regions — NOAA Raster Navigation Charts (RNCs®) for nine popular United States cruising regions. Also
includes PC and Mac free and trial versions of leading charting programs. Individual CDs or DVDs ($9.95 or $12.95).
- Complete Chart Library 2-DVD Set — All NOAA raster (RNC) and vector (ENC) charts and the entire U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
inland waterways & rivers vector (IENC) chart catalog. Raster charts are organized in nine popular cruising geographies.
Vector charts are organized in NOAA and USACE catalogs. Also includes PC and Mac free and trial versions of leading
charting programs and searchable government publications such as Coast Pilots, Light Lists, and Chart No. 1. Approximately
3000 charts. Two DVDs ($39.95).
- Pacific Coast Library DVD — NOAA raster (RNC) and vector (ENC) electronic charts for the United States West Coast, Alaska, and
the Pacific Islands. Raster charts are organized by popular cruising geographies. Vector charts are organized in NOAA catalogs.
Also includes PC and Mac free and trial versions of leading charting programs and searchable government publications such
as Coast Pilots, Light Lists, and Chart No. 1. Approximately 1000 charts. One DVD ($24.95).
The good news late last year was NOAA’s announced plan to release its entire chart library to the public for free. The bad news
remains that the average boater doesn’t know exactly which of the thousands of available charts to download. And then, after resolving
this needle in a haystack issue, fewer still have the capability and bandwidth to download thousands of megabytes of chart
files.
One cruiser commented, “I went to the various download sites and learned my lesson ... free charts cost you a fortune in time and
effort. Why hassle developing a catalog list and babysitting downloads for the cost of a few gallons of diesel?”
