New PDQ Owner - And Glad of It!

PDQ issues applicable across all PDQ Yachts (or if you can't find a place for something, it probably belongs here for now)

New PDQ Owner - And Glad of It!

Post by thinwater »

The new Name will be Shoal Survivor, when ever it is warm enough to scrape vinyl.

Actually, I technically owned the boat a while ago, but not until I sailed it 100 miles up the Chesapeake Bay the past 2 days did I really feel I could proclaim myself the owner. I am writing this to thank the people on this and the PDQ 32 page for their encouragement and input. We got to sail in some snotty, cold conditions and she prover herself to be reasonably fast and extremely seaworthy, with very few wave slaps and never a groan. It did spin one prop a few hours into the trip, and the other engine decided to die at an inappropriate time just as we reached home (Deale, MD), but a fortuitous wind direction and 2 days of practice were enough to see us into the slip with just a sliver of a jib.

I think the thing that impressed me the most with this PDQ, as I climbed into every recess, cleaning out junk and discovering what valuables the prior owner had left me (among other things a spare prop and one with a spun hub... but I didn't find them until docked), is that the finish inside the darkest recess is functionally as good as more finished areas. There seem to be no hidden short cuts. I toured the Gemini factory, and that is not what I found, though I won't say they aren't also good boats. I didn't like the visibility or the winch layout on the Gemini. The Gemini I took out pounded in a 10 knot breeze, and I sailed the PDQ in FAR worse these last days. And I suspect the PDQ cost a bit more... and I think I will get it back... in 20 years!

If only it had heat....

I am glad and proud to join the club!

Welcome to the neighborhood and to PDQs. There are three PDQ36s on the hard at Herrington North right now (that I know of). I think that gives us enough owners to warrant some kind of get-together.

Welcome to the PDQ family, and please have a brew and burger at Happy Harbor for us. We started out in Herrington Harbour, but as you can see, we have made our way south (there are currently at least 9-36's in SW Fla.).
