Genoa Sheets Hanging Up on Mast-Mounted Winches

Post by thinwater »

Yup, I know good sheet management can minimize this, but I single hand a lot and often the sheets get to flog for a few moments. I know the drill but can't always get to each line at the correct moment, particulary as the wind picks up. And snagging a sheet on the mast is a great way to blow a perfectly good tack.

On many small boats and 2 of my past boats, it's normal to rig bungees to guide sheets away from trouble spots. I'm wondering, has anyone tried something likethis on the PDQ 32 or 36? I'm thinking a bungee on each side, starting about 2 feet above the winch, secured to the handle socket, and continuing to 2 feet below the winch, would keep the sheet from looping. It could be easily popped out to use the winch.

Thoughts? I hate drilling holes, but this seem practical. On my last boats, fittings were either pre-existing or used the mast track.

Or just remove the mast mounted winches? I have all lines led aft and no winches in the mast.

I rigged a solution that seems to be working well.

Yeah, after testing it on an even bigger breeze I decided it didn't work well enough, so I pulled the post.
