replace lost batten

Post by amytom »

Heard the mainsail luffing so I stuck my head out of the salon just in time to see the second longest batten fly out of the pocket and go for a swim. I almost went after it but it sank right away and I wasn't sure it was the best time for a MOB drill.

Where do I find the material to cut a new batten? Should I just replace all 4 at the same time to stiffen the sail a little?

Defender sells it. Also, test the next batten down for stiffness (method described in Defender catalog and the post below) to make sure you get the same stiffness. My memory is that the top 2 are the same.

I Posted this about battens. As I recall, taper doesn't matter much on the top 2 battens in most beach cat classes, and that is my impression on the PDQ.

If you have the original battens I recommend replacing with stiffer ones. My original battens did not hold proper sail shape in winds much over 8 knots.

Try a sail maker such as Mac sails in Stewart Florida.
