mold reduction

Post by bg5w »

Last year I painted the underside of the hard-top bimini with a marine alkyd paint. I've noticed it accumulates mold on a regular basis requiring monthly cleaning. Either bleach or vinegar does the job, but was wondering if there existed some type of coating, such as a vanish, that I could paint over the existing paint, that would retard the growth.
Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks

Formula B. VERY effective and very cheap. Vinegar has actually been shown to help mold grow back faster when condensation is present.

Thanks Drew - I'll go with formula B. I think next time I paint it, I'll mix a high level of Borax in the paint to leave a residue. It shouldn't leach out since the underside doesn't get rained on (much)

I wouldn't do that, certainly not without testing. Borax will react with paint.

There are anti-mildew additives for paint.

Try the spray; you may find it is enough.
