Thanks for the detailed info on this as well as other topics Drew. I plan on installing a water catchment system on our boat for our next trip down island and appreciate the tips. James

Actually, try this: A $10 baja water filter.

* Filters 1 micron at up to 10 gpm, depending on tail pipe side.
* Filters rainwater either straight into the tank or into a jerry can.
* Filters hose water into the tank.
* Filters jerry can water into the tank.
* Bag can be laundered.
* Bag can be dried between uses to reduce bug growth. Sanitize it in the sun if you feel the need.

I think there is LOT of functionality in this approach. It's not intended to be a substitute for other filters and bleach as needed, but it should be a handy tool any time the hose water is not 100% trustworthy. I don't think this exists in the market, and I think it should.

I used the foam core DWV to save weight.
Notice the 3/4" pipe thread in the bottom; I can screw in a 3/4 x 6 nipple and it stays in place on the deck fill, or I can srew in a 3/4" x 1/2" hose barb and use it to channel rainwater, as filter and funnel in one.

Specifically, the junk that came out of the hose was an eye opener.



Worked fine collecting rainwater. There is NO question that this water is suitable, after passing through the 0.5 micron NSF 53 FloPlus-10 at the tap.





While I'm happy enough with my combination of screw-on hose filter and on-board filtration for my uses, I'm really happy with this idea for those that need to collect rain, use taps about which they are uncertain, or jerry can their water from some grimy 3rd world tap. So simple and user friendly. One tool doing many things.

A little article re. testing a "Baha water filter" on my PDQ in Practical Sailor this month. Really, this was developed at eepstein's suggestion. As a solution for rainwater for a boat kept on a mooring, but I've been using it for dirty marina water and hoses when cruising.

I believe there will be 2-3 more articles (much longer) on drinking water over the next few months, all loosely based around my PDQ 32. I don't carry bottled water, not any more!

Just an up date. I've been using the Baja rainwater filter full-time for over 2 years now, only using the hose when I run low. The hose water also goes through the filter. An my water is better than ever. As it turns out, the rainwater is better than the skunky marina water.
