I'm finally installing radar on my 32. A Garmin 18" dome.
I plan to install the dome on top of a 9 ft pole at the starboard aft corner - easy to access , make wiring runs, etc. Of course the radar waves from the unit will be above the tops of peoples heads, except for those times when someone might be going forward or back along the side decks.
Anyone have any knowledge about incidental exposures to radar waves?

Low power and a bit of distance. Not to worry.

In the Navy we used to walk around with fluorescent light tubes on deck and watch them light up from the exposure. (Only dimly as the 48e & 49 would swing by). And we all turned out (mostly) okay.

The radar dome on ours is mounted on the mast about 2/3rd the way up, just above the spreader. Don't need to worry about a pole or transmissions.

That agrees with other research I've done on the matter - low power and exposure more than 1 meter away - no concern.

Worst thing about pole mount is the forward blind spot created by the mast.
Worst thing about mast mount is the genoa hanging up on it when tacking.

You are reducing your range, of course. How much depends on the target and sea state.

Installations at the spreaders are easily done from an extension ladder (lashed in place properly). This is NOT done from a bosuns chair. I'm not at all sure that the pole would actually be faster or easier.

Also more weight and windage.

Too much downside for minimal up-side IMHO.
