GST and PST

Post by Bravo 2 »

We recently purchased Windshadow from Ralph and Cindy Bennett. The boat is on the hard in Beaufort, NC. If we bring the boat to Canada, we will be required to pay GST and PST. How does this work? Will we have to hand over a cheque to Customs as soon as we arrive or will we be required to post a bond or will we be permitted a period of grace? We would appreciate hearing from anyone with a recent similar problem. Being Canadian, we want to make sure we get it right.

Hi,

Lynne Sheahan, who coordinates a lot of the exporting at PDQ, has provided me with a list of references for you to check out.

If you still need futher assistance, give Lynne a call 1-888-297-2287.

I hope this helps.

I know that you will pay any sales tax payable upon the depreciated value of the boat.
A long time ago there was a special provision that if the boat was manufactured in Canada and bought back from a third party owner in the USA, only PST was payable, although this may have only applied to a boat made before GST.

Thanks for the info. I will let you know how I get on. I am going to try approaching a customs broker.
