Series drogues vs para-anchors

Post by Ed Ellis »

Since catamarans sit on the water rather in the water, I'm concerned about surfing down waves and pitch poling in heavy seas. I understand that slowing the boat is important, so use of series drogues seems logical, but I have no real knowledege or experience with this. Seems like para-anchors are common on gear lists associated with cats that are for sale. USGC has posted some pretty strong anti-para-anchor reports, but these always seem to address mono-hulls and fishing vessels. Does anyone have thoughts / info @ drogues vs para-anchors for catamarans?

Hi Ed, Get a copy of Drag Device Data Base, by Victor Shane. Besides being a great read, it has over 100 first-hand accounts of people that actually had to use these devices in bad conditions. There are over 20 reports on catamarans alone.
