Erie Canal

Post by Passage Back »

Susan & I will be making the trip from Whitby to Solomon's MD this June on Passge Back (PDQ 36099). We are interested to know how long it took for others to get from Oswego to Catskill so that we can plan our trip. Catskill to Chesapeake Bay is easier to plan but the transit time in the canal is somewhat mysterious.

Erie Canal

Haven't done it yet as going in May, but looking at the PDQ flottila portion of the web site the first year they apparently spent 5 days from Oswego to Waterville. The article from Passagemaker which is on the site gives a day by day description of a 7 day trip from Whitby to NYC.
Last year they stopped to smell the roses with a layover in Waterville adding a day and apparently stopped early one day due to weather. This year they project departing May 13 and arriving NYC May 25- 26. So if it is 2 days to Oswego and one down down the Hudson, apparently a leisurely passage of the canal can be 6-7 days.
Hope this helps.

Whitby to NYC

Post by Dan White »

When we did it in our PDQ 36 (going from memory since our log is on the boat) it was 5 days of traveling to NYC:
Leave Whitby in the afternoon (Day 1) , motor all night and arrive at Oswego early the next morning.
Cruised in the canal 3 days (Day 2,3 &4) and 2 nights (can't travel past a certain time at night) Speed limit 6 knts
Made Hop-o-Nose on Day 4 -- spent the night
Put the mast up on Day 5
One day to NYC (Day 6)

Since we motor at 6 to 7 knots, the MV's will do better across the lake and on the Hudson.
Suggest you check with the factory.

We have done the Erie Canal for the last 5 years and find them to be unpredictable. Most times it only takes 4-5 days but last spring it took 3 weeks due to flooding. Last fall it took 10 days due to flooking from the Catskills.

Keep an eye on the official web site to see if closing are happening. You might look at past years to see how frequent they are. When we came through (1999) it was a drought and there was talk of reducing the number of lockings (it never happened). The year before there were closings due to flooding, and the year after they were shut down for 10 days or so.
