Galvanic Corrosion

Post by Rich Tanner 36083 »

I am having a problem with galvanic corrosion on my 9.9s
These engines are Canadian 2005 models, same size as the old ones.
They started eroding as soon as they were installed and it has continued.
I talked with the dealer and he said the external wire we run for alternator output is definitely not he culprit, which I had suspected at first.
I’m taking steps to minimize the damage, but I am obviously looking for the cause.
Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks for any help.

Hi Rich,
I assume the corrosion of which you speak is on the lower unit. As I remember, Distant Music had a similar problem which turned out to be stray currents thru the SSB grounding. I believe he put a switch somewhere to break the circuit. That solved the problem. His lower unit corroded all the way thru!! Yikes!!
We hope to leave for Georgetown sometime in Jan.

Hi Chet
I hope to be in the Exumas by January also. Hope to see you there.
Thanks for the tip. I'll start with the SSB. I think I may have to break a number of connections if I can't find the exact source.

Distant Music had 2 grounding plates which exacerbated the problem
