Has someone come across a brilliant way to change the a Yamaha gear oil without
hauling either
the motor or the boat.

I tape the bottom of an orange-juice carton to the engine just below the drain
hole. Now that I am good at it, I can usually get it all

Another option is to put someone in the dinghy and get under the engine

Do you have the motor tilted to just above the water?

Yes, otherwise you can't get the OJ carton under the plug

Just a thought. Do you know that you have a little connector in you Yamaha
"package" that came with the boat? It is used normally to inject water in the
lower unit when you are testing the engine out of the water. What if you put a
hose on that and then drew it out with a suction pump. That way you would not
have your gear vulnerable to water splashing in. ?? You can also buy a pump to
send the oil back into to unit with out spilling it. They sell the pump and
adapter at West. Since we change the oil infrequently, I recommend synthetic.

Just a comment from the sidelines here, but while Don is referring to the gear
oil, I think that Kevin might be talking about changing the engine oil?
