Valve Adjustments

Mark
I did that Valve adjustment you asked about. It was really strait forward and
easy. After removing the engine frm the boat. I just tilted the engine up a bit
so the oil did not leak out when I took off the valve cover. The reason I did
the adjustment was because I had used the loose clearance when I rebuilt the
head and the valves were very noisy. Use the small gauge and it will purrrr

Good luck.

Hi Dan, That was quick. How long did it take to do? Did you have to replace the
valve cover gasket? Do you think it would be hard to do in the water, with the
engine tilted up slightly. Now I.'m really anxious to try it

In the 32 I think it would be difficult because you do not have a lot of
clearance around the engine. In a 36 it might be easier. Did not have to replace
the cover gasket. It is more like an "O" ring. In order to do it you have to
have two hands free, I think that is where the rub comes as you can't support
yourself as you hang down over the engine. The other question is why are you
doing it? If they are quiet and it is running well, it probably does not need
it.

Hi Dan, The engines are running fine, finally. They have about 850 hours,& are
not nearly as quiet as they were. I thought a valve adjustment would help,& it
is recommended. Otherwise they're running good.Did you read Colins' postabout
the prop bushings? Should that be checked? I wouldn't even know what to look
for

I have heard of that type of failure before. The spline of the propeler is not
welded to the hub of the prop. It is bonded buy a rubber that is supposed to
help in virbarion transmission, I think. Any way the rubber becomes loose and
the propeller is sort of free floating down there

I guess if your engines are clicking away, you may need to adjust the valves

The have a lock nut that is ,I think, a 9mm and the adjuster is just a little
square tipped affair. I loosened the lock nut and then rotated the adjuster with
a plyers

Good luck.
