9.9 latch problems and possible fix

Post by amytom »

Been having problems with the hold down latches on the 9.9s (again). Thinking or running a second control rope tied to the handle then feed through guides that will be installed in the cowling through a block aft of the engine then up through the seat next to the lifting line. With this arrangement one line will be used for lifting the engine and the other will be used for lowering / securing the engine.
The question: how strong is the cowling for the engine? Will this work or will I end up pushing the fiberglass cover into the flywheel?

Marc your pic didn't come through. Was it the same as the other one with the white shoes? I was thinking of a running version of that so I wouldn't have to open the hatch at all. How has yours worked out?

That's the one. It's held up very well, and it's so simple. All you need is an eye for the hooks,Oh,and white shoes.
Marc

If anyone would like to see it, I can e-mail it to you. I'm too stoopid to post a picture on the forum.

Okay, making progress. Starboard side is done.

Pull one rope and engine comes up, pull the other the engine goes down. Tie off whichever one you pulled and you're good. Don't even have to open the cover anymore. Next idea is to add another block and becket to make it easier to pull the engine up. About the time I finish it all it will be time to repower with power tilt.

Looks good. I suggest you put another eye strap on the center of the cowl, to prevent the rope from sliding off when it's slacked. Mine even slipped when it was tensioned, thus the strap in the center.

The front of the rope is tied to the handle of the engine. Hopefully that will prevent any slipping. I was reluctant to put another strap there as it is close to the starter/flywheel area. The rear strap goes only into the air intake.
