runaway trim

Post by Page 83 »

For some as yet undiscovered reason, my stanrboard engine decided it wanted to be out of the water, and trimmed itself up. I pushed the down button on the binnacle, and it went down, waited till I wasn't looking and came back up again. Several times. All while I was maneuvering into a raft with lots of other Singles-on-Sailboats sailboats, and (of course) a multitude of witnesses. Perplexing. I found that if I unplugged the nine-pin electrical connector it would stay down, but since it had managed to bend the steel shift cable support bar, I had to hop back and forth between the helm and the engine compartment to shift manually. Doubly perplexing. I'm now trouble-shooting.

Sandy,

With the pin unplugged were you able to adjust the trim via the integrated switch on the front of the engine? If so I'd say you are looking at a bad switch in the binnacle or possibly a smashed electric line between the binnacle and the engine. Of course this is assuming your engines are like mine....

Good luck,
Tom
