Presuming comparable costs, has anyone repowered a PDQ 36 with 15hp Yamaha's and
if so. were there any problems

If this repower is not feasible. please respond with reasons.

Richard;
I considered switching to the 15hp but it is only available in 15" and 20"
lenghts. The 15 is not available in the high thrust version. The powerheads are
different. The 15 is 323cc while the 9.9 is only 232cc so it is not only a carb
change. The 9.9 also has higher altenator output

Honda on the otherhand has a 15hp with a 28" shaft and displacement of 280cc

I think the real issue in switching the engines is the shaft length. Our 9.9 is
an extended shaft, 3 inches longer than the normal "sailboat" long shaft. I
think that could cause some cavitation problems when powering into a strong wind
and waves. Also the 15 may not have the gear reduction that lets us have the big
flat propeller, never checked that out for sure, but it would be important.

I think Mike Houghton (Sail Abaco) was doing something about splash skirts in
the OB compartment.

Richard: I would be very interested in this swap myself. Have you checked the
wgt. difference between the two engines? I have a new 15hp Yamaha 2 stoke for
the dinghy, the only difference between a 9.9 and 15 hp two stoke was that the
carb. was bigger on the 15 hp. Of course, so was the price! I would also be
intested if anyone has designed splash skirts for the bottoms of the
engines(while in the wells), off-shore in heavy stuff, the engines are almost
submerged from wash. Best/Jack s/v "mojo"
