What are 9.9's worth?

Post by holomoku »

I am replacing the 9.9 yammys on my 1993 PDQ 36.
The old ones were installed in 2003 & 2004.

The previous owner says they have less than 500 hours but I'm suspicious.
The hour meters on the boat were never replaced and read 6800-7000 hours.
If this is the 3rd set of engines on the boat, maybe he's right.

During my extensive sea trial that lasted 11 hours, the starboard engine quit after about 4 hours running.
The port engine ran all 11 hours with no issues.

Anyway what would you expect these old 9.9's are worth?

You can tell the age by the model number on the engine. I may be interested, depnding on your location.

Hi Mark,

I just saw your reply to my question on the value of 9.9 Yamaha's.
Sorry I didn't see it before the board went belly up a week or so ago.

They are the long shaft, high thrust 4 strokes .
I had one offer from a marina for $250 a piece, but I think I would keep them as spares at that price.
I'm waiting to hear from a Yamaha dealer in North Carolina that is replacing the old engines to see if he will make an offer as well.

What do you think?

The boat and outboards are in North Carolina right now but I live north of Baltimore, MD about 2 hours from Philly and could get them here in a month or so.

You may want to learn why it quit.
* Out of oil?
* Over heat (no water)?
Either is posssible in a boat that is not used too much.

Normally starting is the issue. When they quit while running...

Hi, I just picked up a nice 2001 low hour motor last Sat. Sorry. I paid $850, it's a tiller model, so I'll have to do some wiring to convert it to a remote start. I hope I did OK, time will tell I guess.
Thanks, Marc

The boat did sit for a year or two before we bought it at the end of February.

We checked oil,....it was OK and the cooling water was flowing when we started.
Still it almost seems like an overheat to me. Got it to catch for a second or two after it stopped but it wouldn't stay running.
I haven't spent any time or money on it yet 'cause I'm working on getting the new motors installed.

Glad to hear you found something Marc.
Thanks for sharing what you paid.
It's more in line with what I was thinking might be fair.
Of course a dealer or marina probably offers less so they can make a little money.

I sold an old 8 hp Seahorse for $250. It was running fine, but I was tired of it.

I bought a pair of Yamaha 9.9 LS remote controls for $1200 total, about the same age. They took a little while to get running because they had been sitting, but were fine. You will get the best price if you can get them running before you sell them. Alternatively, get them running in the boat.

Here is a post on replacing them: http://sail-delmarva.blogspot.com/2009/ ... n-pdq.html. In my expereince, replacing them in the water was not more difficult than on dry land.

The truth is, they may have a lot of years left in them. Hard to say. Really, you need to learn Yammy 9.9 or you will enjoy your new boat less! They are not hard to understand.

You may want to consider keeping the best one as a spare, if it runs well. If you don't have a spare prop, carb, some ignition parts, fuel pump, and water pump, you will be buying them someday. IF the "bad" engine has fatal problems, strip good parts.

Yamaha dealers have a formula for determining trade-in price. I received $1050 for a 2002 and 2003. Of course I also overpaid for my new motors
