Has anyone repowered with 15HP Hondas or OMCs? If so was there a noticable power
increase? Was it worth the effort? I am considering the Honda BF15

Has anyone repowered with the Honda BF 9.9 Power Thrust?

This may be old news by now, but Ed Lunsford (Easy Breeze) 36035, repowered with
Hondas a few years ago. I believe the boat went to charter with Mike Houghton in
the Bahamas.

If you haven't made up your mind yet, please consider this. The gear reduction
on the Honda high thrust is higher than normal, but not as high as the Yamahas

Both engines have typical 4-stroke power curves. At 6 knots, the Yamaha is
turning 4300 rpm, and developing very near its best power. At full throttle, the
Honda will be turning less than 4000 rpm, and developing 70% of its rated power,
or about 1.5 hp more than the Yamaha. With a smaller prop, the Honda has less
thrust in reverse than the Yamaha, and you need to have that reverse power when
you are using opposite throttle to maneuver, or when you have to "undo" some of
that forward thrust while docking. Note: propeller slippage is the big unknown
when you try to use the numbers deemed safe for consumers by the marketing
departments! My conclusion is the Honda would be worth the price if it had an 11
x 6 propeller. But it can't.

Thank you for your comments but I wasn't looking for speculation. I was looking
for a reply from someone who has 15HP outboards. Maybe I will be the first

I doubt the Honda will fit in the wells of my 32

Further, the boat sped increase from 3/4 throttle to full throttle nets less
than a knot of boat speed, suggesting to me that 15 hp is not going to move me
much faster. It might let me push thru some higher winds, tho.

I have been watching this website since it was started and a lot of people have
talked about (15hp) the switch but I don't remember any one saying they had done
it. I believe the issue comes down to the fact that our engines have a gear
reduction. This allows them to develop full horswpower at say 4,000 rpm while
turning the prop at say 1,200. I think the Evenrudes do that and someone
switched to those engine a couple of years ago.I don't think they ever gave a
feedback. So the issue with the Honda High Thrust will also boil down to gear
reduction. If you look in the Yamaha advertisement, you see that the recommend
boat speed for our engine/propeller is 7 knots. God Luck
