Fresh Water Flushing the Yamaha 9.9 Outboard

Has anyone found a set of outboard earmuffs or fittings that fit the Yamaha 9.9
to allow you to flush the engine with a garden hose? If so, can you provide the
model or part number?
Thanks!!!

For those of you who are interested, their is an aftermarket system for flushing
the Yamaha outboards which is easy to install and affordable in price. It
consists of a t-fitting, water hose(like the type that is part of the coolong
system in the engine, and an adapter to allow you to connect the cooling system
hoses to a garden hose

I'm sure there are some of you out there who can fabricate this system with
little effort. It does require a plug in the female garden hose fitting to keep
air from entering the cooling system during normal operation. about 15 minutes
is all that is required to flush the cooling system of the engines. Hope this
helps some of you.

The Yamaha hose adapters works fine. Our Yamaha service man uses them also

There must be other ways but to get the screw out the first time, I used the
biggest screwdriver that fit and turned it with a crescent wrench while pushing
hard on the screwdriver handle. Replacement screws with washers are available
from Yamaha parts stores. Torque them to factory specs. They must paint the
engines after high-torquing the screws into the housing

Hi Marc,
I have not had great success using any muffs (although the Yamahas with their
rectangular ears seem to fit better)with the engines mounted on the boat.It is
possible to attach the muffs with the engine up and then carefully lower it into
the saltwater with muffs attached but this is a real chore

I was able to flush the motors on Lee Hendersons lift with the boat out of the
water but I think someone needs to engineer a fitting on the powerhead. Of
course the problem here is that the engine would have to be tilted out of the
saltwater to prevent the positive displacement rubber impeller pump from pumping
seawater through the engine if it were running. This would mean certain damage
to the impeller as it would run dry overheating the rubber blades causing early
failure

I think the answer is a fitting on the engine such that it could be flushed
without running it

Please let us all know if you come up with any answer to this

Hi Chet,
How do you use the muffs in the water? I tried & they just slip off. Are the
Yamaha muffs different? Yamaha also makes a hose adapter to fit in the "Wash"
inlet, but I can't get the screw out to try it.Must be corroded in there
