WATER IN LOWER UNIT ON 9.9

Posted by JACK DARMON on February 21, 2002 at 18:47:00:

I JUST CHANGED THE OIL IN THE LOWER UNIT OF MY 1999 YAHAMA 9.9 AND WHEN I
REMOVER THE DRAIN PLUG WATER CAME OUT BEFORE THE OIL. THE OIL THAT CAME LATER
WAS BLACK--I SUSPECT THE SEAL BETWEEN THE UNITS IS ALLOWING WATER TO ENTER THE
LOWER CASE--HAS ANYONE CHANGED THE SEAL --IF SO ANY SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED--THE
ENGINE HAS ONLY 350 HOURS
THANKS

Do you have a service manual?
The hardest part is getting the face off the lower unit. I have done two. The
first one I used a sharp screw driver and wedged the pieces apart. I kept
applying heat and then penetrating oil. Slow process! I would work on it and let
it soak, then heat it up and try again. Finally got it. The second one I had to
do while cruising. The mechanic was rough on it, did a lot of banging and
heating. He finally attached a wheel puller to the piece with a cable inside the
opening and held tight with cable clamps. Lot of heat and it finally worked. You
have two o rings in that area. The whole gear pack comes out in one piece. You
alos have a regular seal there, maybe 2, to replace. With the gear pack out you
can take off the nut at the bottom of the shaft then take apart the water pump
and remove the seals up there, I think there 2 sets there

If you don't have the book, or when you want to by the parts, try getting them
from Boatune.com out of Florida. They discount the parts which covers your
shipping costs

If you haven't taken the lower unit off yet you may be in for a heat and wedge
problem also. Remember that most of the area above the lower unit is hollow so
do your wedging right at the bolts. Good luck
