Yamaha 9.9 flush kits

Posted by Chris Randolph on September 19, 2002 at 14:11:00:

I know this has been a topic before, but the recent article in the newsletter
has spurred my interest in rigging up this freshwater flush system for the 9.9s
on my 32(#32047). Can anyone who has done this give me some tips? I'd be
interested in anything that would save me some time and repeat trips to West
Marine, etc. Also, do you need positive pressure to flush this way (i.e., can
you winterize while still in the water), and do you need to flush with the
engine running and/or hoisted? Grateful for any guidance (I still don't know
much about outboards- most of my prior experience is with diesels)

Chris

Flushing system is easy to fabricate. It requires some hose, two tees, wire tie
clamps and an engine cooling hose to garden hose adapter

First locate the cooling install those underneath the CDI unit on the engine,
cut this line, Install T fitting and atach enough hose to exit the engine
cowling where all of the electrical wires exit. Attach the water hose fitting at
this end. The Engine should not be running to flush. The flushing can be done
with the engine up or down. Be sure that the hose fitting has a secure cap so
you maintain proper cooling when the engine is running. If you are not sure of
what to do, take this explanation to an outboard mechanic and explain what it is
you want to do.

Chris - I just added a 'Don Baker' flush kit to my 9.9 - easy as pie. I used the
Yamaha flush adapter (you can get them from any Yamaha dealer/they may have to
order them though) used some brass fittings and 2 feet of garden hose, and some
extra long cable ties from Home Depot. I ran the hose up the back of the engine
and ended it where I can reach it. Worked perfectly and installed in minutes. I
did add a shut off valve on the top of each hose. Flushing is easy and I just
purchased a "salt away" product from West Marine that I can add into the flush
with a hose adapter. I flush the engines vertically (I can taste the fresh water
from the bypass stream) and then I have raised the engine for the last 30
seconds or so. I have the same question as you though. Will I hurt the engine by
running it in a raised position? ie. Oil circulation etc. Does anyone have an
answer to this question? thanks Roger

where do you get these 'Don Baker' flush kits? I have a 1993 Yamaha 9.9 and need to add some sort of fresh water flush kit as I use it in the ocean and it gets salt water clogged. dancamp007@yahoo.com
