OB Engine throttle/shift

Is there an easy way to adjust the geometry of the the throttle/shift cables? My
starboard engine throttle increases before it shifts. This makes the engine jump
into gear very hard. In reverse it will sometimes jump out of the down lock.

Thanks for the ideas, I am thinking it is in the engine control box.

Good advice from Chet. If I had my fingers down in the engine, I would also
check the adjustment on the gear shift. If you slip both of the cable ends off,
then center the shift mechanism and start the engine to make sure the idle is
right, both cables should "slip" back on with out any movement in the throttle
lever or shift lever. If it still jumps out of reverse, you have to adjust the
lock nut on the shift lever that is visible just above the lower unit. Good
luck!

Hi Bill,
There is some minor adjustment on the engine end of the throttle and shift
cables. You have to slide the metal clip forward allowing the plastic fitting to
be removed from the pin on the engine. You then rotate it clockwise or
counterclockwise to change the throttle position and reverse the procedure to
secure the end

Be careful to get the throttle cable adjustment. If you mistakenly adjust the
shift cable the engine may slip in forward or reverse or not come out of
neutral

There is also a idle adjust screw you can set on the engine throttle linkage

You can back this off slightly

Moving the engine power lever should move only the shift lever first and then
the throttle. If the throttle moves before the engine is in full forward or
reverse there is something wrong in the engine control box mounted at the helm
station

Good Luck & Happy Holidays,
Chet
