repowering PDQ 36 with outboards

Any information would be greatly appreciated. We want to install 2 new outboards
and after receiving very conflicting information are almost convinced to install
2 T9.9EXH and remove the tillers for remote operation as the Remote is not
factory manufacturered and sold here in the USA. How much trouble is involved in
replacing the Yamahas with Hondas? Is it worth the effort.Would it be possible
to install 4 stroke 25hp Yamahas? How about the weight? I probably will have
more questions but that all I can think of fornow.

The only problem with the Honda BFP15 is the mounting bracket. It measures 11"
where the Yamaha 9.9 measured 6"

To mount the 15s the engine nancells had to be dropped. They fit well with the
exception of the transom bracket. At 11 inches it hangs down within 2 inches of
the waterline. The long bracket is requried to mount the power tilt unit

I am still in the yard so I cannot report on the operation of the 15s. Oceania
will be on the hard another week, but as soon as she is back in the water I will
report on the sea trail

I can tell you the extra long shaft (27") puts the propeller in more water (ie

deeper) than the Yamaha. This will be good in rough seas. However, I do not
motor very often. Only 500 hours since 1995. In norhtern California we have
plenty of wind

Due to the strong winds in San Francisco Bay Oceania is on her third mast. The
third mast was redesigned by Ballengeer Spars, ( same spar maker that supplies
Corsair, Santa Cruz and Express)

Our new mast has double diamonds to support the center of the stick. Much
stiffer than the original mast

After the second mast bent just above the lower shrouds, I called PDQ and talked
to Simon. The only question Simon asked was, "Why were you sailing in 28-30
knots of wind". My answer was that is normal conditions for the summer months in
San Francisco Bay. He sighed and hung up. I haven't heard from PDQ since

Not much factory support, they really could care less about your troubles after
sale.

When first reading the comments made by Mr. Pollard I had felt that there was
nothing to be gained from reacting in a fashion that would be less than useful

I have thought about the conversation that occurred on the phone with Mr

Pollard and my recollection of the comment was quite different. I believe that I
asked you why you were sailing in that wind strength without approprately
reduced sail area. That question was asked because you had told me that the
winds were gusting up to the 30 knot range and you did not think reefing was
neccesary. The conversation may have ended there because I was flabbergasted at
the comment. You are right though about this being the second mast on this boat
that has been dammaged. It has been my experince that most professional riggers
and consequently most owners will tend to tighten the lowers on this rig as they
would on a multi-spreader rig. That is to say with very tight lowersand
relatively less tight capshrouds. As the capshrouds stretch, which all wires do,
and the very tight lowers do not stretch there is an imbalance created. I have
been on many boats that have had this imbalance. I have to admit that I am
concerned that Mr. pollard's contact with pdq yachts left him with such a poor
opinion of the company. Hey, you can ask anyone of our owners that know me that
I am not the best guy to call for customer service. That is why I have people
like Lynne, Debbie, Jackie, James, and Ed, these people are generally my front
line troops. These guys give till it hurts, but obviously they are human as well
as will occasionally drop the ball and allow me to answer the phone

Nuff said for now, I couyld go on but at the risk of boring everyone

Hooray for PDQ Customer Support I thought it only me. I didn't realize everyone
got the same treatment. I just asked for the diameter of the rudder post.

Roger pollard in a 4/26 note says that the 15 is available in a 27 inch shaft. I
am wondering if there is a confusion between "transom height" and "shaft length"
Maybe he can clear that up.

Look back to the discussions on gas vz diesel. Lots of info there. Looks to me
like the 15 hp with 27 inch shaft is the closest you can get

Switching the wiring harness and getting rid of the tiller is not a big deal

Most mechanics can do it. I have done it 3 times when I wanted to power test my
spare engine on the back of a small boat before putting into my boat.

Where can a 27" shaft length be obtained the longest I have found in Yamaha is
the 25" which is called the extra long shaft
