Yamaha CDI Unit failures

Posted by Roger Ford - Kokomo on July 15, 2003 at 04:46:00:

My Yamaha 9.9 suddenly wouldn’t start. I had used it to motor out of the marina
and 2 hours later, when I went to start it in order to anchor, - nothing. I
checked it out the next morning and I’m getting no spark to the plugs. I’ve gone
over all of the connections and they all seem to be OK - tight and clean. I’m
getting full cranking power to the starter

I've seen on the Board that CDI units are often mentioned as prone to failure

The engine is 3 years old and has 650 hours

Instead of taking it to a dealer for a full set of testing at big bucks, I am
inclined to take a chance, buy and install the CDI unit and see if that does the
trick - I can always keep it as a spare if it isn’t the problem. I’m fairly
handy, but would like any advice from other 9.9 owners who have performed this
operation. Is it a fairly simple remove and replace?
Thanks in advance
