2 Outboards and 2 Electrics ?

The **retracting** 9.9 Yahmaha design (feature) has always been a plus or a
minus, depending on how they are operating at the time. The only real solution
is to move up to a 40'+ catamaran to have the needed space and payload for some
reliable diesels
For those not moving out of the classic 36 layout,
another option is to consider the growing trend in
electric power. Those solutions can benefit from the
**spare** (retracted) 9.9 Yahmahas tucked under the
cockpit lockers. With electric engines and long shafts
in front of the rudders, short trips and harbor entry
exits do not need the outboards. The hours on them can
be kept low
The props and shafts of course turn the electric
engines into generators when under sail, or when being
driven by the outboards, thus converting some of the
energy back into storage in the expanded battery bank
With a serious on-board gen-set solution, the electric
option becomes more attractive, and the under-sized
9.9s as battery chargers becomes less of an issue
One could imagine an evolution where electric is added
and the 9.9s are phased out as they grow old and fail
They do not last forever, especially in warm salt water
climates. One could also imagine a situation where one
is being repaired while the other sits idle as a spare
just in case the electric fails
