Yamaha 4-stroke ?

Posted by Chester King on September 14, 1999 at 06:43:33:

Our original 34' PDQ has twin OMC 9.9 outboards. I want to replace them with the
high thrust Yamaha 4-stroke engines. Can anyone tell me the average fuel
consumption and speeds using one and two engines on the current 36' models using
those engines

Thanks in advance,
Chester King

I have a 32 and have delivered a 36 to fla. I get at least 3/4 of a gallon per
hour on my engine hour meter. Obviously there is some idle time and some docking
time into each trip

Did you read an article last year where one of the other owners switched away
from the yahama to the evenrude? I have had some problems with mine and found
that getting service was really a problem

How was your experiance with the Evenrude.

I have a 32 and when I run them at full throttle for 8 hours
I average .8 gals per hour per engine, or 1.6 gals per hour when both running

Would like a 36 consumption would be the same

I have 600 hours on the engines and the consumption has remained very
consistent.

We have a new (1998) PDQ 32 that we have used for two seasons, mostly in Maine

Total hours on each Yamaha is 396. Overall total fuel consumption is 322.3
gallons. This of course includes idle as well as cruising consumption under
varied conditions, including coming down the Erie Canal

We would be interested in seeing more numbers reflecting other people's
experiences, particularly on a PDQ 36. Does anyone have tachometers so that they
can measure fuel consumption at known RPM?

I put in a tachometer using a togel switch to go back and forth between the
ingines. It makes it easier to get them both running at the same rpm and takes
up less space on the instrument area. I am not sure what the pole and impulse
numbers on the engines so I choose one that seemed right and ran the engine at
3/4 of max. I get about 7 knots at the setting.

On the PDQ36 I avg .75gph per eng full throttle giving 7.8kts. One engine gives
6 kts no wind.

In response to your questions on the Tachometer, and the question from Sandy, I
did not see your questions until today when Kevin sent me a note! Sorry

I am not sure how much more detail you need. If this does not answere, contact
me direct

The tach comes with three wires + - and a wire that has to pick up a feed from
your engine output. I just connected (+&-)to a circut breaker that was on the
buss in the cockpit. That gives you power. I took the other wire to a toggle
switch. I went into the engine and pulled the grey cover that is on the side of
the engine all the wires are connected under that. I pulled apart the green &
white. I took a wire and stripped it back about an inch. I inserted it into the
connector and pushed the connector closed. That wire is then connected to the
toggle. That engine is then ready. You must then select the setting for the tack
among the little switches on the back of the tack as called out in the
instructions

Drop me a note direct if this doesn't answere

Dan Hofmann

Please post the details of installing your tachometer. Did you use the remote
cable harness from Yamaha?
