yamaha 9.9, this year's problem

Post by next exit »

Motor will start and run smoothly after consideable carb cleaning but will only do so with the cowling off. Put it on and it slowly starves and quits.
Any suggestions?

Internet access is intermittant so tel # is 519-494-2825

Don,

Oxygen, (air) is required as well as fuel for combustion. The 9.9 "breathes" through the rear of the cover at the handhold. Check this area for restrictions.

9.9 Yamaha cowling causes the engine to starve and quit

I had the same problem several years ago. Seemed really weird. After much messing about, we found one small peice of tubing at the rear of the engine was not pushed onto its fitting. It was hard to see, if I remember right, we could only see it from a dinghy. It was hard to put back on too! One of the mechanics had to be a contortionist to get his arm and wrist into a position to push the tube back on. Maybe a mirror would help locate it while in the boat? Once back on, the engine ran fine. How it got off is anybodies guess. Hope this helps!
