Yahama Lower Unit

Does any one have expierance taking apart a lower unit. I don't want to break
something getting the gears out but it seems to be held in place even though I
taken the bolts out.

Thanks for all the help, I stumbled across a local teacher who does an outboard
repair class yesterday and found that you need a puller to get the lower casing
free. I am sure the heat will be needed but I had not thought of boiling it

Much easier on the paint and seals. Thanks
By the way any one who needs parts should try a place called Boattune.com on the
web. They give a good discount. You just have to be able to play the waiting
game for delivery if you don't go by air.

Chester & Martin, Thanks
I have the service manual and I don't see anything there to describe the
removal. I have looked all over that lower unit and I can't find any C clips or
retainers. I only want to get into the water seal above below the water pump but
it looks like I have to take off the nut on the bottom of the drive shaft to
lift the shaft and then change the seal. Any suggestions would be helpfull

Thanks.

Dan,
The only thing I can see that might cause a hang up, is the shift linkage

However, it sounds as though you can't get the housing to separate. When the
bolts have been removed there are still two dowels locating the housings in
alignment. You may have to use a rubber hammer, boiling water and a lot of self
restraint to get the lower unit free!
Unfortunately, you appear to be correct in assuming that the drive shaft will
have to be removed in order to change the seals. Good luck.

Can't help with the specifics, but I can highly recommend the official factory
service manual. Costs around $35 and has clear exploded diagrams for every part
of the engine. It's almost worth buying just to have the correct torque
settings!

Dan are you talking about pulling the lower ubnit from the engine or the gears
from the gearcase. The shift lever may have a bolt connected up near the
powerhead before the lower unit will drop off. The gears usually have a c-clip
type setup in front of a seal. Hope this helps
