Okeechobee Waterway to completely close

Post by Ed Ellis »

Here's a heads-up for anyone planning on using the Okeechobee Waterway this summer. The St. Lucie Lock & Dam will be drained and completely closed to boat traffic to repair manatee protection devices. Heres the tentative schedule:

Closed: beginning July 14.

Open: by Labor Day, Sept 1

That's only half the story! The western leg from Okeechobee was closed at Moore Haven from May 6 to about Aug 20. The route across FL is effectively closed for the months of May, June, July, and August !!!
I planned to take the PDQ 34 I bought in mid-June across this route to get accustomed to her. HAH! We went via the keys and are now heading north with no "wind-damage" insurance until we are north of Brunwick GA.
I can't believe the boating community puts up with this government inefficiency. Someone should be strung up for not coordinating their maintenance.
