chain depth markers

Post by captain hank »

has anyone figured out a lasting way (at least for a couple of seasons) to identify chain anchor depth as you drop it?

Cap'n, I have tried several different items and have found a quality Zip Tie does it for me. I use one at 15' and two at 30"..Etc..... The zip ties seam to run through the anchor windless just fine. Perhaps once ot twice a season I replace them with fresh ones as needed and they are cheap!. Sorry I really did not answer your question about a "Lasting" solution. Perhaps none exists except a chain counter.

WE also use colored wire ties. Red = 25' Yellow = 50" Green = 75' Black = 100" After 100 feet, we combine the original color with black so Red & Black = 125' etc. They last at least 1 year... When we get to rode/line we use strips of colored spinnaker fabric twisted within the twisted line.

Try buying a few cans of spray paint, each in a different color, and then paint sections of your chain via codes.

e.g.,
white = 50'
red = 100'
red/white = 150'
blue = 200'
blue/white = 250' ft
etc.

Smaller intervals might look like this:
white = 35'
white -space-white = 70'
red = 100'
red/white = 130'
red/white-space-white = 170'
blue = 200'
blue/white = 230'
etc.

I also use different color zip ties for 10', 20', 30' etc., and use white zip ties to denote 5' increments. It is a little excessive, has lasted 1.5 years, but it's easy to find & replace worn ties b/c we use two ties per marking. An inexpesive solution with immediate fixes when we pull in the anchor.
