Battery Voltage ???

Battery Voltage ???

Posted by Roger on September 06, 19100 at 08:11:12:

I have the four 6-volt wet-cell Trojan batteries providing 420 Ah. During the
week, I'm normally on shorepower so the Inverter/Charger has brought them to,
and maintained them, at a full charge. After disconnecting from shorepower, the
voltage reads 12.8v but quickly (within 3 hours) drops to 12.6 or 12.65 volts
with only a minimal load (just depth, speed and VHF)on the batteries - this
represents a 15 to 20 percent (63 amphour) reduction in available amphours. Is
this initial drop normal? If not, any suggestions?

Roger, have you looked at the batteries in your boat?
Althought the spec sheet states 420Ah, mine came with four 75 Ah Trojans, giving
me 300 Ah

I also get a 12.6 voltage running on the house bank, and I also think its normal

Hi Roger, Hope your enjoying your new boat. Read about your adventures in the
newsletter. Great!
I think When the boat is plugged into shore, the charger will maintain a float
charge anywhere from 12.8 to 13+ vdc. Then when you un-plug ,the battery settles
back to 12.6 or so,which is considered to be fully charged. I have 4 6V gells
which float charge at about 13.15, then settle back to 12.6 when un-plugged

Sounds normal to me

Hope to see you in Annapolis, Marc
