Watermakers & Windpower

Posted by Chet White on October 31, 2000 at 21:33:00:

I am considering a Pur Survivor40 for use in the Bahamas this Winter. To help
power it I am also considering a Fourwinds wind generator to augment two 120W
solar panels. Does anyone have experience with using or installing either of
these units or have any commments on them or something better? Many thanks

I installed a Pur-80 about a year ago, and used it for several months in the
Bahamas. The Pur-40 takes too long to fill the tank for me. I felt comfortable
using it in remote areas, and underway in calm sea. I am sure the filter (very
expensive) would not survive use in places like Marsh Harbor. I never use it in
the Florida Keys where we keep the boat. We have an Air Marine on the boat which
is great in winds over 10 to 15 knots. I keep it on air brake most of the time,
which keeps it quiet and doesn't wear out the bearings.

Hi Chet. Larry installed a Four Winds to take care of the Spectra Watermaker and
our frig. We find the watermaker to be really fast filling the tanks and the
Four Winds quiet compared to some I have heard. He got the two systems from a
company in FL. If you have any questions, give us a call on the boat phone at
810-242-5433

Had a PUR 35 & a Fourwinds on our last boat

Performance on the 35 dropped each year we had
it til we sent it to the factory for overhaul,
cost 800 to fix, then sold the boat. One gallon
per hour takes way too long to refil tanks, also
quite noisy. Put a Little Wonder (7 gph) on the cat &
am happy so far. Just figure on running the motor
to fill

The 4-winds performed great from the time it was
installed. Normally there wasn't enought wind
to run the watermaker & the refrigeration without
running the motor occaisionally.

We installed an Airmarine wind generator. Several factors influenced our choice,
but two prime reasons were compact size/styling and customer service. Some
critics claim that they are loud, but we don't find it ofensive and really have
nothing to compare it to. It really doesn't start to make any noise (or power)
until you hit 10+ knots apparant. At anchor, after going to bed, you can barely
hear it in the forward cabins. If the wind is 20+ knots, the Airmarine is just
one small part of the many sounds you're hearing. The Airmarine also has a stop
switch that can be installed that allows us to stop the noise if we feel it's
disturbing us or neighbors. For what it's worth, it gives off a lot less noise
at 25+ knots. So far, I'm pleased! I saw somewhere that they are introducing
another "quieter" model in the near future.
