Gelcoat Streaks in Galley - Stubborn Discoloration

Post by MagicDragon »

We saw a previous posting on discoloration, but no resolution to the issue. Now that winter is upon us, we'd like to take care of maintenance issues that were moved down the priority level.

The fiberglass gelcoat in our galley is discolored by VERY STUBBORN dark streaks. Has anyone else dealt with this problem, and what did you use to bring gelcoat back to original unblemished finish? I'm anal and want those walls clean again!
Here's what we've already tried - to no avail:
Foaming Disinfectant Bathroom Cleaner
BarKeeper's Friend Cleanser
Mary Kate's On and Off Hull Cleaner
Davis FSR Blue Gel Fiberglass Stain Remover
Denatured Alcohol Solvent
Restoration Technology Marine Strip

I've go the same streaks and tried a few cleaners with no luck. They appear to be in or under the gelcoat. I'll keep looking and let you know if I find any solutions.

Jim and Kathy (the previous owners) struggled with the stain in Eric's alley and came to the conclusion that it had penetrated the gel coat too deeply to come off. It should be resprayed. That would be the easy part. The hard part will be controlling the overspray in an enclosed area.
