Hot Water Heater

Posted by Thomas Gillispie on April 06, 2002 at 14:51:00:

All,
With one last weezing gasp, our hot water heater expired this morning. I spent
the better part of the afternoon squeezed down in the starboard aft lazarettte
removing its dead carcass. It seems it sucumbed to internal rust. My question
is, where does one obtain a replacement from ? Has anyone else had to replace
their's ?
As always, any comments or tips would be most welcome

Regards,
Tom

I just bought a 1998 PDQ 32, the water heater is inside the cabin and not very
big. We have been on the boat for three weeks and it has been working fine. Call
PDQ and see what it is. The boat is in Charlestown SC and I won't be back to it
for a week.

When we bought our 32 last year, the water heater did not work. If I remember
correctly, it was a Wolther 3000 (about 4" thick x 10" wide x 12" tall right?)

I talked to Jerry Wolther at Precision Temp and bought a new control module from
them. With that and some work on the flow switch, I brought ours back to life
and it has worked fine ever since. Jerry was very helpful over the phone

My recollection is that the plumbing in our unit is all copper so I don't know
how it could have rusted through. One thing that CAN happen is that if the flow
switch sticks open and there is no high temp cut-off thermistor, the unit will
continue to heat until the solder holding the copper tubing together melts. Was
there any evidence of solder having dripped into the bottom of the unit? It
might be repairable

When we got our boat and the water heater was not working, CCC gave us a
refurbished Precision Temp unit to replace it. It was huge (completely blocked
the starboard forward compartment), did not mate up to the plumbing, gas or vent
and had such a complex internal control scheme that I never was able to get it
to work. I eventually sent it to Precision Temp and told them to keep it. I was
really disappointed with it compared to the older, simple Wolther

If you want, e-mail me directly. Maybe your old one is salvagable. If not, I
might be interested in it for spare parts.

We had Gerry Wolter at the 200 owners party at the boat show. They are in
business under the name of Percision Temp. Thier phone number is 513 641 4446 or
641 0773. If those numbers are not good, get back to me and I will find them for
you

How ws your winter, where are you know.

Hi Tom,what heater do you have? If it's a Wolter there are a few things you can
do to extend it's life. I kept mine going for about a year before throwing in
the towel

Tom,check your measurments. I trimmed about 1/4" to get mine in. I think our
hatches are the same size

Thanks for the infor on the Wolther's new web site. Unfortunatley, they units
are 2 inches too big. I really am reluctant to cut up my hatch to make it fit

Any one else have a suggestion ? What are they using on the newer PDQ's ?

Hi, my problem was with the flow switch. I finally gave in & bought a new one

There is no longer a Wolter heater or any replacement parts made. Jerry's new
company & heater in entirely new. The new heater requires a duct for power
venting & a shelf of some type to install the unit. I also had to cut the
lazarette opening slightly to get the unit in. This seems to be the only heater
of it's kind on the market. I've been thru the mill with this, so if I can help,
let me know

Marc,
It is a Wolther 3000 unit. I took the cover plate off and found that atleast 6
places where rust has made the pipes so thin, that they were now leaking. Short
of replacing all the pipes, I don't know how it could be saved
