Mast Head Issues

Posted by Thomas Gillispie on April 30, 2002 at 04:35:00:

All,
This weekend, our main halyard and our topping lift became almost impossible to
opreate because they are so tight. I have examined the runs leading up to the
mast and haven't seen anything fouled. I suspect there are issues at the top of
the mast. Has anyone had this experience and can give me some tips before I head
up the mast ? As always, thanks in advance

Tom

Had the same problem. Old, still lines. Took the main halyard out and untwisted
it

Works fine now

Climb to top of mast; Remove cast alum. housing; you
may find the topping lift line has jumped over the
divider to a
position on top of the main halyard, thus binding both

This happened to me twice. I built a block from starboard
to restrict the opening between the divider & the top
to prevent reacurrance. Seems to work.

We had the same problem last fall. The sheeves at the masthead were in need of
lubrication. Try a dry slide lubricant-designed for sailing applications (ie,
silicone based). Don't forget to lube the track & slugs also.) Also take a look
at the sheeves for any damage or cracking. A secondary problem with this system
can also be old halyards, which have become inflexible. They can be cleaned in
mild detergent and rinsed in fabric softener or if worn-replaced. We replaced
ours, but if they're just stiff that is an expensive option

We're lauching tommorow (May 1 ~ 8:30 AM), and I have a Bosun's chair and a
willing victim to go up the mast if you are around HHN. Let me know ASAP if you
want some help.
