My Honda EU2000i Portable Generator

Posted by Roger Ford on June 04, 2002 at 05:05:00:

Based on PDQ reports, I decided to order a Honda EU2000i. The best price on the
web was from Southwest Fastener; however, this seemed to have been a type of
bait and switch. I received an E-mail saying in part "We will be unable to fill
your order for the Honda EU2000I unit you ordered.... and recommend the Yamaha
EF2800I to you

I then contacted Hayes Equipment Company, placed the order and had the unit in a
few days

Now for the performance ... I was down to 56% of my 420 Ah capacity. Running the
generator, through the shorepower, produced from 80Ah to 61Ah as the batteries
were charged. In 2 hours, my capacity was back up to 86%. The control for the
Freedom 20 Inverter/Charger was set to "Charge" (no inverter) and the "Power
Share" was set to 15Ah

I placed thre unit on the bow (at anchor) with a 25 ft. heavy duty 110 volt
extension cord running to the shorepower. Although the unit was somewhat loud,
it wasn't so bad that you couldn't talk or read or do boat chores during the 2
hour run time. I suspect that the 2 hours used about 1/2 gallon of gasoline

I highly recommend this as an emergency back-up to your solar and/or wind

Hi Jack,
I just bought a used Cruisair portable A/C unit for Allezcat and will try it on
the EU200i. It should run it as the specs call for 16A starting current and 6A
running. Will let you know

I tried the generator on my separate air conditioning shorepower circuit to see
if it would get the AC past the start-up surge - and it did! I did not let it
run for more than a minute.

Honda 2000 generator to power air conditioner

Post by Goodbye Columbus »

Some time ago I followed a discussions on the use of the Honda eu2000 to provide power to run an air conditioner on PDQ’s. I haven’t seen any discussion of this topic lately. I’m getting ready to take Goodbye Columbus from Useppa Island to the BVI (after hurricane season) and haven’t been able to get anyone to install a fixed generator in my boat.
Thus I am again looking at the option of using the Honda 2000. I have the standard factory installed CruiseAir 16K BTU unit. It appears, on paper, to be within the parameters of the Honda to power. Have your units done the job?

Does anyone have any recent experience with one or with using two in series to provide current for air conditioning at anchor?

Hi Jim, I have a 1993 36' that I bought in '97, and it came equipped with a Kohler 6.5 kw gas genset. It is capable of running A/C, But I use it mainly for battery charging & ref/frz. I have cold plate refr. that has an AC motor.
