Well, I have a 4000+, so, back to my original question. What problems have you
experienced and/or what parts would you take cruising?
Thanks ..

The main cause of sudden failure seems to be the small spring pins that hold
most of the parts together. These pins seem to shear off very easily. I replaced
most of them with solid pins made from twist drill bits of the same size. This
eliminated most of my problems, but it is still a poor design. I recently
replaced the unit with a ST4000+MKII. Much better design, and after 2000
miles,zero problems

Spent some time talking with the Raymarine tech representative at the NE Boat
Show about the Wheel Pilot. He had a new ST4000+ Mk II that has a revised ring
assembly mounted on the steering wheel. It looks like a major redesign with
beefed up internal parts. It is available separately as a "repair" part and can
be installed by the owner, using the original drive motor. It is not listed in
the usual Raymarine catalog, but can be obtained by calling tech support. Ask
for the 4000 WP replacement wheel ring kit. Cost estimated at 100->200$. No
guarantee that it solves the sudden failure problem.
