Loose footed Main

Who has them what do you think. I have been recommended by North Sails in
Annapolis to change my old sail to that style. I am having it shortened some due
to my boom hittin my bimini before being able to fully sheet the main in

Need input quickly as it is happening this week. Should I stay with a tracked
foot

Thanks

Hello everyone
Just got back from a two week vacation. Of course all hell broke lose while
gone

The new 36 lite has proven to be a real winner with a first place finish at the
toronto multihull club and a second place finish at the youngstown level
regatta

Thoughts re loose footed mainsail. I have never believed in them as I think that
they allow the air travelling along the bottom part of the mainsail an escape
route off the foot of the sail. Ididn't see any loose footed sails in the
americas cup and those guys are fast. Think end plate on an airplane wing or
winged keel

Chester,
It seems loose-foot mains are normally used on in-mast furling systems (Hood)

I assume you would keep the battens even with the loose foot as they are very
important for sailshape

If you reduce sail area by shortening the luff you do reduce area ( and
performance ) of course. Something gained, something lost!
I think I would get a second opinion ( from another sailmaker ) before commiting
to that arrangement

Good Luck,

If you go to http://www.sailnet.com and do a site search on the word "foot" you will
get a list of articles - the top article on the list deals with loose footed
mains.

If the loose foot sail shapes better etc. why arn't they the standard on the
PDQ?

I would go with the loose foot as it allows you to maintain better sail shape
through a wider range of outhaul settings.
