Anyone installed a robust below decks Autopilot on a PDQ 36?
I'm working on the install of a Raymarine Type 1 linear drive, 6002 control head and S1G course computer.
Project Goals for a robust AP system that can:
--Be connected to the port rudder post.
--Act as a backup steering system in the event of primary steering system failure or starboard rudder damage/failure.
--Reliably keep course in the variable conditions found in blue water passage making.
I am finding the rudder post compartment is nearly too small to house a Type 1 drive unit and will require a custom mounting bracket to achieve the correct mid-stroke dimension.
Here is my preliminary design sketch:

Re: Autopilot - Robust Below Decks Type
The New AP worked awesome in its first 220nm of continuous use as we sailed from Mystic, CT to Cape May, NJ over the last 32 hours. It drove the boat very nicely in a variety of condtions including sustained winds in the 25+knot range with gusts higher. You can also see the custom bracket I had fabricated and other details of the install on my blog. I'll be posting videos of the auto pilot driving at: www.pdq36.blogspot.com
