Trampoline Paint

Post by JerryC »

Well the sailing is over here in the near north for the winter. I read that painting the Trampoline would prolong its life. I removed it for the winter & am going to put a coat of paint on it. Problem is what paint should I use? Help would be appreciated.

In my experience it is the stitching that goes, not the fabric.

I have had good success with covering the stitching with black gaffers tape. It is a very heavy duty version of duct tape that sticks well, lasts over 1 season, and removes easily for replacement at that time. I got it through Mc Master/Carr. Much less invasive than paint.

I would check the stitching and have it re sewn if needed. As far as painting, what about the stuff you paint onto inflatables to protect the hypalon fabric or the stuff you put on sunbrella/canvas to protect the stitching. That is a good Idea I may think about doing now that you bring that up.

Our current cat the tramp totally came apart after a trip across the GulfStream in 8- 10 stormy seas. Some of the attachments for the lacing broke the lacing loosened and the tramp started dragging in the water. By the time I spotted it, half to three quarters of the tramp was loose 2" wide webbing. That took quite a lot of sewing to put back together and not easy keeping it straight/parallel where it had come apart. If you tramp is old I do suggest looking in to resew it.

I would suggest that if your trampoline is at all marginal, that it should be replaced. It is an area where you might want to be, during stormy condition, to recover a roller furled sail that will not furl or to rig an emergency halyard, and is probably the most likely area for you to fall through and overboard in bad conditions. Trampolines are probably the single most exposed and weathered piece of equipment on-board. They are not protected by any sort of UV cover, and in seas of any size they take a continued wash of salt water and vertical motion caused by the breaking seas. Be safe and stay away from a cheap fix.

If you really want to protect it during winter storage, remove it from the boat and re-lace it in the spring. I have also found that the lacing lines deteriorate even faster than the tramp.

Sunrise Yacht Products makes an excellent replacement.

Thanks for the input. After much surfing I found a prduct that claims it will work on the tramp. my trampolene is in good shap & my reason for painting it is to keep it that way.
