Honda 15
Honda 15
All,
I was checking out PDQ's for sale on Yachtworld.com and I saw a 36 in California that had Honda 15's installed in the proper engine locations. Does anyone have more info on this particular setup? How well do the engines fit and do they clear the water when lifted? Maybe I missed it somewhere on the forum. It'd would be nice to know if this is viable next time we need to repower.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom:
Several years back, there was extensive posts on the Honda 15 replacing the Yamaha 9.9. I ended up having customs brackets made and mounted Honda 15's on them. I then enclosed the Yamaha engine compartments. Also had to modify the "deflector" that is just in front of the motors. Also had to extend my arch. Big job. Big bucks. Results are EXCELLENT. It all looks original. My only regret is that I did not seriously consider bigger outboards. I'm talking 40's? 50's? Why not?
I have recently been emailing Wayne who I believe put Honda 15's in the existing compartments. You might want to drop him an email. wbrou@uab.edu
We both have experienced salt build up in the cooling system. The solution is fresh water rinsing OFTEN!
Hope this helps.

Re: Honda 15
I installed the Honda 15s on Oceania in 2003. They work great! They do lift out of the water with the power tilt. The only down side is they cannot be removed through the top of the engine compartment. I've never had to remove them, but when I do they have to be remove from below. So the boat has to be hauled.
They also have more power and burn less fuel than the 1991 Yamahas they replaced.

Re: Honda 15
If my memory serves me (which is questionable) the Honda 15's weigh 110 lbs. each.
I have not found the engine weight + the weight of my brackets and extended arch to be detrimental in any way.
Sorry I didn't go with bigger outboards.
ATTITUDE is planning on a Florida - Bermuda - Bahama - Florida trip in early June.

Re: Honda 15
OK, I've been thinking about this issue.
Call me crazy, but I was looking at the relatively new 2-stroke technology that Tohatsu has. It uses fuel injection, so the emissions are good, it's fuel efficient, and you don't have to mix gas and oil, since it has an oil container, and does the mixing on the fly. It has good reviews.
Now here's the interesting part: because it's 2 stroke, it's fairly small for its horsepower. The smallest one they make is 40HP (!!!), but it looks to me like it would fit in the well of a 36.
Here's the data (check the dimensions page)

Any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Brendan

Re: Honda 15
Brendan, here are my first thoughts...
Big issue is no 25 inch long shaft so I suspect they will not be long enough.
Also big issue is they are more than 200 pounds each. I think the Yamaha 9.9s are less than 100 pounds each.
Third, I have had oil injection go bad in the past and ran a big 120HP motor to the brink of failure and requiring a rebuild because the oil injection clogged and failed.
Just my initial thoughts, wish it could work because I am close to wanting to repower and the thought of the new 9.9s dragging in the water (and the accompanying galvanic corrosion issues) don't make me a happy camper...

Re: Honda 15
Hey Sam,
I just measured my 9.9. The distance from the "deck" (roughly at the bottom of the cowl cover) to the cavitation plate above the propeller is about 23". This leaves the prop several inches under water. On the Tohatsu, this distance is listed at 20.9 for the long shaft. So it may work....
Regarding the weight, it's certainly an issue...trade-offs and all.
Regarding the oil injection, I know next to nothing about outboards, having started with diesels.
Anyway, any other thoughts are welcome.

Correction: I meant that the distance from the transom clamp to the cavitation plate on the Yamaha is about 23". This is listed as 20.9 on the Tohatsu.

Has anyone considered Electric outboards, perhaps Torqeedo, with a good sized diesel genset?
