Logistics Associated with Importing a Used PDQ from Canada

PDQ issues applicable across all PDQ Yachts (or if you can't find a place for something, it probably belongs here for now)

Logistics Associated with Importing a Used PDQ from Canada

Post by phild »

I'm in the process of closing on a used (36094) Capella located in the Great Lakes (Ontario) region. I wondering what if any experiences people are willing to share regarding the process of importing to the US:

1) Is there a need for a Customs Broker? Cost?
2) Are there likely to be any "duty" payments?
3) Is there some sort of certification required that the boat meets US Coast Guard safety and environmental requirements? If so where do you get this?
4) Any recommendations as to route from Lake Huron to Boston, MA?
5) Any recommendations as to where to have the mast stepped and unstepped? Especially if there are any places to avoid!
6) Any experience with the route via Lake Champlain? Lock 10's status on the Erie Canal route is in question.

Sorry for the long post but as a newbie the process is somewhat intimidating.

Thanks in advance for any and all input!

You might call Lynn Sheahan at PDQ. She handles all the new boats sold to the US. She was a wealth of knowledge when I brought 36089 in.
