electric conversion option

I hope to convert my PDQ32 to electric motors in a year or two. I have not made any final decisions as to what approach I will use but as weight is very important on a small cat I will probably use a small genset and not add a lot of batteries.

For those of you interested in exploring electric options you might want to check out http://www.ecyclemarine.com - they are showing a conversion of the Yamaha 9.9 to electric that looks like a rather simple switch.

It does seem that electric drives will be the trend for cats in the future.

That is interesting. Have you talked to them about actual power output versus the Yamaha? Does it have the torque and HP to push the boat at it's normal speed. How about the highest voltage option.. could it put out more speed than the Yamahas?

I have not had any contact with the e cycle people but from what I have determined it seems that you only need about 5 hp electric to equal the performance of a 9.9 gas engine.
In order to run most efficiently you probably need to plan on running in the 6 to 6.5 knot range as I think getting extra speed would greatly increase power consumption. If you are looking for higher speeds you probably need a little more power and accordingly a bigger generator.
