Jiffy Reefing questions

Post by amytom »

Had concerns about my jiffy reefing as the reefing lines were very stiff to pull through the grommets on the sail. Also looking into making our own "Stack Pack" type sail cover and was curious about the exit slits for the reefing lines.

Talked to Sam and learned that his reefing lines came out of the boom and tied directly to the sail grommets. Mine had been set up to go through the grommets and tie back on the boom.
Looked at the PDQ32 owners manual and page 52 clearly shows the forward reefing lines tied to the grommets and the rear lines fed through and back to the boom.

What does everyone else do and what are the advantages all around? Right now I'm inclined to follow Sams lead but I don't know how that affects sail shape pulling only out and not down.

BTW: my main is completely loose footed.

Hi Tom,
I have a 32 (not loose footed) and put on a "stack pack" cover ... My reefing lines up front run from grommets on the sail through the front boom ... but the ones in the back tie to gromments on the sail and end up tied around the boom. I ended up putting holes via gommets in the sail cover to allow the reefing line to pass through and tie around the boom.

Tom,
Just another FYI...Our forward reefing lines tie to the grommets and the rear lines go through the grommets then tie to the boom. Reefing when winds have already built allows the rear lines to pull evenly (looks like an upside down "V").

Our main is not loose footed & does not have a "stack pack".

Sam. I was hoping yours was right as that would be easiest. If you change yours then I'll loose my excuse to go the easy route. :)

Sorry for the double post. Typing on the Blackberry while driving...

Also, where do the rear lines tie off at on the boom? back near the topping lift or straight down from each reefing point and on the side of the boom?

Mine are tied off on the fitting on the underside of the boom roughly located below each reef point.

Same .. Tried to draw up a very crude diagram of my rig - going from memory - but I guess there's no way to post pix on this forum? I can email if anyone is interested...

Forum does not have a place for upload of images, however, I can post anything on the http://www.pdq36.com website if you email it to me at sdensler@mac.com

Are they tied to an attachment point on the boom or just tied around the boom? I have no attachment points at that location so the only way I could do it would be to tie around the boom itself or install cleats.

They are just tied around the boom with a bowline - the knot is on the inside of the sail cover - have a hole/grommet on either side of the stackpack sail cover to pass the line through as well as in the foot of the sail (the mainsail grommet was already there). Looks clean and so far so good.

Did Troy put in the grommet or did you do it yourself?

I did it myself while the cover was on the boom - one of those - "ooops forgot about those reefing lines" anyway - use one of those copper grommet kits - hammered it through and seems to be holding fine - not a lot of stress in that spot - more of a pass through.
