I'm trying to rebuild a lower unit that leaks at the prop shaft seal and at the shifter shaft seal.
1) How bad of a leak is too bad? Vacuum and pressure testing has air leaking past the seal where as oil and water are much thicker.
2)How do you remove the end plate over the prop shaft? I've pulled the bolts but it won't loosen. I've tried tapping in all different directions with a hammer. I'm tempted to just break the plate and buy a new one. What's the trick?
Thanks
Tom
What's the trick with the lower units?

I think there is a special Yamaha puller the dealerships use along with heat to the casing but I have never attempted to seperate the two. My lower unit also leaks a bit on one engine such that the oil turns a light brown (emulsified?). I just change it occasionally and so far it is working fine at 1200 hrs. I do have a spare lower unit if worst comes to worst!!
Good Luck,
